As of January 1, 2025, the Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia (STIBC) has introduced a mandatory English proficiency requirement for all candidates applying for membership. To ensure high professional standards and effective communication, applicants must now meet the following English language criteria:

  • Minimum score of 8 on ALL bands of a CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) test, such as IELTS, or an equivalent recognized language test.

If you do not currently have a CLB test or a similar language assessment, you are invited to take STIBC’s Language Proficiency Test, which is available online. This test has been designed to assess your language skills in a manner that aligns with STIBC’s membership standards.

Please note that this English language requirement applies to all new applicants, regardless of their background or profession.
